The Otsego County Patrons Co-operative Fire Relief Association (OCPC) is a Property and Casualty Insurance Company located in Schenevus, NY in southeast Otsego County. It is owned and operated by policyholders, which provides the Co-operative the flexibility to create truly creative and quality products that help our members manage risk and gain the valuable peace of mind needed to confidently forge ahead in their endeavors. Our Mission
The mission of Otsego County Patrons is to provide quality insurance products at reasonable rates, underwrite fairly, settle claims promptly and promote company stability.
The Co-operative, at its discretion, will seek, but not limit itself to:
- Productively manage assets in order to facilitate the financial health of Otsego County Patrons Co-operative Fire Relief Association.
- Promote growth in the area which the Co-operative serves through productive agency management.
- Encourage high levels of professionalism and proficient service through well-trained, properly motivated staff dedicated to the mission of the Co-operative.
- Promote and preserve the health of the mutual insurance industry through active leadership, support and participation.
- Effectively use best insurance practices and policies in underwriting and claims settlement.
- Promote good relations within the community through participation in activities, sponsorship and investment.
- Provide and maintain appropriate facilities to enable the Co-operative to carry out its mission.
- Encourage the Board of Directors to responsibly develop policy and establish operational guidelines in the best interests of the Co-operative.
Our History
The Otsego County Patrons Co-operative was established on July 23, 1895 in Otsego County, New York by the Otsego County Pomona Grange to offer fire insurance coverage to Grange members in Otsego County exclusively. 18 years later the company was incorporated and was an established fire insurance provider exclusively to Grange members in Otsego, Schoharie, Delaware and Greene counties. At the time, the purpose of the company was “to insure dwelling houses and their contents, barns and their contents, hop houses and the hops and fixtures therein.” The limit of insurance at that time was $3,000 (almost $86,000 today) and assessments were made following a loss.
In 1956, OCPC was reorganized, and laws were amended to expand beyond Grange members. In 1978 the Charter was amended to write Homeowner and Farm owner, Liability and Inland Marine coverage. Since then, OCPC has made several amendments to add more counties and coverage types.
About Us
Today, OCPC primarily focuses on upstate New York counties. As a co-operative, we cannot write in New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx and Richmond counties. We now offer policies for homeowners, mobile homeowners, farm owners, landlords, as well as standard fire & liability insurance, commercial fire & liability insurance, business owner, and seasonal homeowners/mobile homeowners coverage. OCPC is dedicated to providing affordable coverage while continuing to promote fiduciary strength and providing peace of mind to our policyholders at the time of a loss.
For all this time, we have retained our identity as Otsego County Patrons Co-Operative. Today, as the regional insurance environment has shifted, we are proud to continue to serve a market that some of the larger regional insurance carriers do not. We may be a small company, but our regulatory and operational demands are the same as any of the larger national companies.
Our office has been located in the rural village of Schenevus in upstate New York for many years. Presently, we have six staff members, and their ability to provide comprehensive and intimate service results in an impressive retention rate. In fact, many of our clients have been with us for several decades which is a testament to the service our agents provide. Additionally, our agency force consists of captive agents and large agencies and brokers. As of year-end 2022 we had over 4,000 inforce policies with written premiums totaling over $3,000,000.
